  • National Institutes of Health: Approximately 15% of American adults (37.5 million) aged 18 and over report some trouble hearing.
  • Reliable estimates for American ASL users approximately 2 million persons, including a number of children of deaf adults and other hearing individuals.
  • The Modern Languages Association gathered the data for the most studied foreign languages in American universities, and placed American Sign Language 3rd before Spanish and French. In their 2016 Fall enrollment report stated 107,060  for ASL.

ASL GAP

Reducing the huge gap in accessing American Sign Language (ASL) is crucial to promoting communication and inclusion for Deaf and hard of hearing individuals. Here are some ways to address this gap:

  1. Education: Providing more education on ASL, Deaf culture, and the needs of Deaf and hard of hearing individuals can help to raise awareness and reduce stigma. This includes offering ASL courses in schools and universities, and providing professional development opportunities for educators, healthcare providers, and others who work with Deaf and hard of hearing individuals.

  2. Technology: Advancements in technology have made it easier to access ASL resources online, such as videos, apps, and online courses. Increasing access to technology and developing more ASL resources can help to make learning ASL more accessible to a wider audience.

  3. Community outreach: Reaching out to the Deaf community and engaging in dialogue about their needs and experiences can help to promote greater understanding and reduce the gap in access to ASL. This includes providing opportunities for Deaf and hard of hearing individuals to participate in community events and activities, and supporting organizations that promote Deaf culture and ASL.

  4. Accessibility: Ensuring that public spaces, services, and events are accessible to Deaf and hard of hearing individuals is crucial to promoting inclusion and reducing the gap in access to ASL. This includes providing ASL interpreters, closed captioning, and other accommodations as needed.

By addressing these issues and promoting greater access to ASL, we can help to reduce the gap in communication and promote greater inclusion and understanding for Deaf and hard of hearing individuals.

ASL.school Philosophy

ASL.school is committed to providing an innovative and effective American Sign Language curriculum that aligns with the DAVES philosophy. This philosophy is based on five major foundations:

  1. Deafhood: ASL.school recognizes the importance of Deaf culture and the unique experiences of Deaf individuals. Our curriculum is designed to promote Deafhood, which refers to the positive and affirming experience of being Deaf.

  2. Agility: Our curriculum is designed to be agile, meaning it can adapt to the needs and preferences of each individual learner. We believe that this flexibility is key to effective learning and helps to ensure that every student can succeed.

  3. Vocabulary: Vocabulary is a key component of learning ASL, and our curriculum emphasizes the importance of building a strong vocabulary. We provide a wide range of vocabulary lessons and exercises to help students learn and retain new signs.

  4. Expressions: ASL is a visual language that relies heavily on facial expressions and body language. Our curriculum focuses on teaching students how to use these expressions to convey meaning and emotion in their signing. As well as analyzing English and ASL expressive idioms.

  5. Sentences: Finally, our curriculum emphasizes the importance of constructing sentences in ASL. We believe that learning how to create clear and grammatically correct sentences is essential to effective communication in ASL.

By aligning with the DAVES philosophy on these five major foundations, ASL.school is able to provide a comprehensive and effective ASL curriculum that empowers learners to communicate with confidence and fluency.
